The Chinese Lunar Calendar, and thus, the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series of gold coins depicts a new animal for every new year. With 2015 being the year of the Goat, what better way to commemorate it than by getting yours hands on a 1/20th oz Australian Gold Goat coin? This new addition to the Lunar Series II replicates previous releases in its attention to detail and extravagant design, but is home to imagery unlike anything that has been seen before. With a purity of .9999 (99.99%), the 2015 1/20th oz Australian Gold Goat is among the purest gold coins in the world. The coin’s reverse boasts the image of a goat stopped along a treacherous mountain path. The goat is standing in a stoic, upright position peering into the distance. Amid the background is a large mountain range whose peaks expand across the coin’s face. Beneath where the goat is standing are the words “Year of the Goat.” The coin’s obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II as rendered by Ian Rank-Broadley. Along the outer edges of the reverse are inscriptions which read “Elizabeth II”, “Australia”, and “2015.” Finally, the obverse is also marked with the 1/20th oz weight, .9999 purity, and $5 AUD face value indications.
The Perth Mint has been in business since the end of the 19th century after it was opened as part of the Royal Mint of England. Since then, however, it has broken ties with the English mint and is an entirely independent operation. The 2015 1/20th Australian Gold Goat is the 8th release of the second Perth Lunar Series.
